Mara, called Beloved Mara or Saint Mary, is the highest mother deity in Latvian mythology. Just as God is the Father of the World, so Mara is the Mother of the World. The human soul is originally with God, and Mara takes care of giving the soul a material cover. Therefore, the child was perceived as Mara's gift, which Mara helps to give birth to during the birth. Mara gives, maintains and takes the human body again, because she is in charge of the whole tangible world.
